A leader of the women's wing of the independence movement, and a political figure in her own right rather than as the wife of one.
Salome Kapwepwe was a Zambian political activist and organiser in the independence movement, working alongside Julia Chikamoneka in mobilising women into the nationalist campaign against colonial rule.
She was married to Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, later Vice-President of Zambia, and remained politically active in her own right.
